About This Spot

Stepping into Trails End Lodge feels like entering a cherished retreat nestled just on the edge of Wausau’s gentle waterfront. The pace here leans comfortably into casual — relaxed enough to unwind from the day yet lively enough with the murmur of happy conversations and clinking glasses to remind you that this is a gathering place where community and nature quietly mingle. There’s an unspoken rhythm to the way guests drift between cozy indoor tables and the inviting outdoor deck, where soft music drifts alongside the lake breeze and views stretch across rippling water.

The atmosphere welcomes you with warmth but never feels forced or overly polished. Here, the charm lies in the understated details: a sincerely friendly nod from staff who remember familiar faces, the timeless appeal of wood and stone gracing the interiors, and the subtle hum of locals sharing stories. This is a spot where you come to savor moments that feel simple yet meaningful.

Food at Trails End Lodge unfolds like an honest conversation about the region’s flavors, with a particular affection for thoughtfully prepared fish and seafood dishes that draw locals back time and again. Whether it’s the comforting familiarity of a well-loved fish fry or the delicate crispness of a beer-battered haddock, each plate invites you to slow down and appreciate the care behind every bite. The menu thoughtfully balances hearty favorites with fresh, approachable fare — from tender pan-fried walleye to the cozy richness of clam chowder, the offerings seem to reflect the same warmth found in the lodge’s atmosphere.

This is not a spot for rushing, nor for fleeting visits. It’s a place where pacing your meal alongside the shifting light across the water makes the experience feel a touch more meaningful. The staff’s attentiveness and genuine kindness complement the welcoming setting, fostering a sense of belonging whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor discovering a hard-to-keep secret.

For those who seek a gathering place defined by comfort, genuine human connection, and the quiet pleasure of good food shared in a natural setting, Trails End Lodge offers a welcome pause — a moment to simply be present, savor the surroundings, and enjoy the company at your table.

This place is busy but it was so worth the short wait to eat. The trails end lodge has the BEST fish and seafood meals by far. I have eaten at many places and none come close to how delicious our food was. We will definitely be going back. Service and food were excellent. I would highly recommend stopping in here to eat.

Service was good, didn't have to wait to be noticed, Got our drinks right away and our appetizer at the right time. Got the perfect portion of food and very tasty. The atmosphere was laid back with a comfortable temperature. It felt cozy.

Trails End gets busy for lunch and dinner, and they do not take reservations; plan accordingly. Five of us enjoyed Friday lunch and will be back! The servers are great, food is top notch, the owner comes around (and has many patrons’ names down pat), and the views are good too! Just to let you know, their smelt was the best I have found in years! They have a great diverse menu with something for everyone. We ordered the fish fry, poor mans, clam chowder, and smelt. We all had different sides: baked potatoes, fries, potato salad, and sweet potato fries. Everyone was completely satisfied and leftovers were packaged up. Easily, on food quality and taste alone, I’d give five stars. However, other observations needed to be considered—and I chose 4 stars to be equally fair.

This is one of those places that you want to share a review so they'll get business, but also don't want to share a review because they might get more crowded or alter something because they're getting busier. This is hands down the best place for fish fry. I've tried many of the others, including top ranked places, and it's just superior. It can get busy, but the staff is overall friendly and attentive despite the rush. I like that they often extend their fish fry to other nights than just Friday. I can't say I've had anything other than fish here besides of course come cheese curds. The only negative thing I can find to say so that you know how good this place is and I'm not just exaggerating is that the sides run out fast and the German potato salad is different than other recipes I'm used to. Their tartar sauce is absolutely delicious and the fish/batter itself is good on its own without it too!
